Cholera is a potentially fatal diarrhoeal disease that is transmitted between humans and by the consumption of water and food contaminated with Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae) bacteria. It is globally widespread and affecting mostly people living in dire conditions with limited access to clean water sanitation and hygiene in areas where cholera surveillance is deficient. There is a need for easy-to-use, low-cost Point-Of-Care (POC) tests detecting V. cholerae bacteria in water samples to establish an early warning system. In this pilot study funded by the Swedish Research Council, we adress such limit by using the Crystal VC dipstick test to detect the presence of the bacterial into water.
